Biography

Sarah Margaret Qualley ( KWAW-lee; born October 23, 1994) is an American actress. A daughter of actress Andie MacDowell, she trained as a ballet dancer in her youth. She made her acting debut in the 2013 drama film Palo Alto and gained recognition for her supporting role in the HBO drama series The Leftovers (2014–2017). Qualley appears in the films The Nice Guys (2016), Death Note (2017) and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), and the video games Death Stranding (2019) and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach (2025). She received praise and nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards for her portrayals of Ann Reinking in the FX biographical miniseries Fosse/Verdon (2019) and of the title role in the Netflix drama miniseries Maid (2021); she also received a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for the latter. Qualley has since appeared in Yorgos Lanthimos's films Poor Things (2023) and Kinds of Kindness (2024), and earned a second Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the body horror film The Substance (2024). In 2026, she co-starred with Jacob Elordi, Guy Pearce, and Josh Brolin in director Ridley Scott's post-apocalyptic drama The Dog Stars.

Quotes

“I wrote to my mom saying 'Look, I don't think I want to be a dancer any more so I'm going to quit ballet and stay here. I will have this and this income next week.' I laid it out in a way that she couldn't say no because I was so organised.”

— Thomas Corr, Johannah (June 14, 2017). "Introducing indie actress Margaret Qualley". Evening Standard.

“It’s literally the dream collab duo. It was incredibly surreal for me. To be in the flesh with Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke and be able to not only witness their process but be a part of it was life-changing.”

— Bergeson, Samantha (January 20, 2025). "Margaret Qualley Says Starring in Richard Linklater's 'Blue Moon' Was 'Life-Changing'". IndieWire.; On working with Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke on Blue Moon.

“I don’t think I want to commit to a franchise. It seems like a lot of time, and I’m scared. I’m a commitment-phobe maybe. But also, no one’s asking me to do anything.”

— Nemiroff, Perri (August 24, 2025). "Don't Expect 'Honey Don't!' Star Margaret Qualley to Jump Into a Franchise Anytime Soon". Collider.
