Marlee Matlin, the Oscar-winning Deaf Hollywood actress, spoke at the Maiersdorf Conference Center at the Mount Scopus Campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The meeting was organized by the Disability Studies Center in the Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare, with the support of the Ruderman Family Foundation and the Joint Distribution Committee in Israel. In the meeting, Matlin talked about People with Disabilities in the Media.

At the time she was the youngest actress to have received an Academy Award and until today remains the only deaf performer to have ever earned an Oscar. She has since been nominated for two additional Golden Globe Awards and four Emmy Awards. In 2009 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. In 2021, Matlin starred in Coda (Child Of Deaf Adults), playing the role of Jackie Rossi alongside of Emilia Jones, Troy Kotsur and Eugenio Derbez. The project earned Matlin one of that year's Crystal Awards (WIF: Women In Film Honorees).
