This model illustrates an experiment performed in 1862 by Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) to study the fermentation of grape juice. One bunch of grapes is wrapped in sterilised cotton wool while the other is exposed to the air. When both bunches were ripe, they were crushed separately in vessels – those from the covered bunch did not ferment but the uncovered ones did. This experiment showed that alcoholic fermentation only happens when the grape juice comes into contact with germs of yeast in the air. This experiment was one of a series by Pasteur that disproved existing ideas about spontaneous generation. maker: Unknown maker Place made: Europe Wellcome Images Keywords: grape vine; half model; Microbiology; Fermentation; spontaneous generation

This visiting card was owned and used by Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), a French microbiologist. The card reads: “Louis Pasteur Membre de l’Institut, Ecole Normale, rue d’Ulm. 45.” The card would have been given out when Pasteur was on a formal visit. The “Ecole Normale” is the Ècole Normale Supérieure in France where Pasteur began his education, and where he in-termittently taught before being appointed director of scientific studies in 1856. maker: Unknown maker Place made: France Wellcome Images Keywords: Fermentation; Rabies; visiting card
